Reverse osmosis systems treat city or private well water to remove chemicals, bacteria, and inorganic dissolved solids. An RO system requires pretreatment before filtration to prevent the buildup of scale on membrane surfaces.
Typical RO water filters have a storage tank and postfilter to polish drinking water before delivering it to your faucet. There are also tankless RO systems that eliminate the need for a storage tank.
Reverse Osmosis Membrane
Reverse osmosis is an advanced water purification technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane to separate molecules of pure water from other chemicals and dissolved substances. The membrane has billions of tiny pores that allow water molecules to pass while preventing other larger molecules from passing. Differential pressures cause pure water to move across the membrane from a lower concentration side to a higher concentration side. This natural osmotic process is called reverse osmosis (RO).
In order to effectively use an RO system, you must start with clean water that has been treated with prefilters and postfilters. This is because contaminants can foul the RO membrane and cause it to wear out prematurely. The pretreatment filters help prevent these contaminants from entering the RO membrane.

The length of time between membrane replacement depends on a variety of factors, such as contaminant concentration, feed water quality, membrane type and condition, and operating conditions. Generally, an RO membrane can last up to two years.
It’s important to know when your RO membrane needs replacement. One indicator is if the RO system starts producing more waste water than it does fresh water. Another is if the taste of the RO water changes. You can also use a TDS meter to test the rejection rate of your membrane, which will help you determine whether it’s still functioning properly. If the rejection rate is lower than 85% – 80% it’s time to replace the membrane.
