Motorola SR5500 Review

The Motorola SR5500 is designed to offer round-the-clock reliable operation. It has 50W continuous full transmit power and a high-quality design that was validated through Motorola Solutions Accelerated Life Testing programme to meet stringent quality criteria.

The surround receiver has multiroom aansluitingen for a wireless 5.1 setup. This makes it possible to listen to music in the kitchen while preparing dinner or watch a movie with kids without disturbing them.

Audio

The SR5500 is a versatile audio receiver with three stereo inputs, a pair of 7.1-channel motorola sr5500 SACD/DVD-Audio preamp outputs, and two digital inputs (one optical, one coaxial). It upconverts composite and S-Video sources to component video and features an adjustable delay for maintaining lip sync between the source and the TV.

Despite its modest price, the SR5500 is a powerful performer with a strong reputation for quality. We enjoyed the crisp, natural sound of old-timey music in the O Brother, Where Art Thou? DVD, and the roar of the engines in Flight of the Phoenix put us right inside the doomed plane.

We were also impressed by the SR5500’s ability to set individual surround levels for each channel, so you can enjoy high-resolution discs the way they were meant to be heard.

Video

The SR5500 isn’t the most beautiful radio on the market but it does have a fetching brushed aluminium fascia and solid feeling buttons. It’s also the heaviest and most robust feeling unit in this group by quite a margin. This makes it a solid choice for anyone who wants to add external accessories like speaker mics or two-wire surveillance kits.

Connectivity is quite good on this model too with both a pair of component-video inputs and four digital inputs (two optical, two coaxial). However Marantz didn’t include any provisions for connecting HDMI-equipped components and instead you’ll need to use a separate stereo amplifier for multiroom purposes.

Thankfully the sound quality is more than up to the task and it can handle most DVDs with ease. It’s particularly impressive with the old-timey music on the O Brother Where Art Thou? DVD and the Soggy Bottom Boys’ voices really come to life. On the more action centric DVDs the SR5500 can deliver the goods too with tyres screeching and gun shots delivering a convincingly dramatic drama.

It’s easy enough to program the Motorola SR5500 using its simple onscreen menus and the graphical interface is very intuitive. It can upconvert composite and S-Video sources to component video and an adjustable delay maintains lip sync with all source devices and displays. It can even motorola two way radios be switched to an audio-only mode should you want to use the SR5500 without a TV present.
